Compute Canada enables Canadian researchers to perform world-class research using Advanced Research Computing (ARC) strategies. User News: Compute Canada’s Response to Meltdown and Spectre Bugs

On January 15, 2018, Compute Canada users received an email about our response to the Meltdown and Spectre bugs. Please find a copy of the message below. If you have any questions, please email support@computecanada.ca.

Dear Compute Canada User,

As you may be aware, two hardware vulnerabilities were announced last week, Meltdown and Spectre, that affect processors from Intel and AMD, including those in use on Compute Canada systems.

The security of your data is our utmost priority and our systems teams are acting diligently to update Compute Canada servers as needed and as patches are released by various vendors. Some temporary system outages may be required to complete this work and these will be communicated appropriately according to the scope of the outage. For large scale outages, details will be posted to the Compute Canada System Status page: https://status.computecanada.ca/  

Please note: If you are operating your own virtual machine in CC’s clouds, you are responsible for updating its operating system to include the latest security patches. Refer to the Meltdown / Spectre page on the Compute Canada Documentation Wiki for instructions and pointers to external resources.

We are monitoring our systems’ performance to determine the impacts, if any, of these security updates. If you experience performance issues that you believe are a result of the security patches, please contact support@computecanada.ca.
