Compute Canada Applauds the Government of Canada Investments in Digital Research Infrastructure

New investments announced today will accelerate discovery and innovation in Canada by supporting the essential tools required to conduct world-leading research.

(Ottawa, On.) Compute Canada applauds the Government of Canada’s announcement of $100 million to be invested by the Canada Foundation for Innovation funding in digital research infrastructure in Canada. We look forward to working with the Government of Canada and the Canada Foundation for Innovation to ensure these funds address the urgent and pressing needs in data management and advanced research computing in Canada.

“We are pleased to be recognized as a key pillar of the digital research infrastructure in Canada in the federal budget along with CANARIE and the Canada Foundation for Innovation,” says Mark Dietrich, President and CEO at Compute Canada. “We look forward to working with our partners and members to ensure Canada remains an attractive and competitive place for discovery and innovation.”

The advanced research computing (ARC) needs of the Canadian research community continue to grow as the next generation of scientific instruments is deployed, as big data and high performance computing become increasingly relevant to answering challenges in an ever broader list including manufacturing, drug discovery, personalized medicine and advanced materials. New datasets are gathered and mined in innovative ways, and technological advances allow researchers to construct ever more precise models of the world around us.

On behalf of the advanced research computing community, Compute Canada appreciates the opportunity for regular and predictable capital investment to ensure advanced research computing in Canada remains current and competitive. Regular investments will go a long way to support research excellence in Canada and to help Canada to keep pace with global opportunities.
