Games have a long history of being a proving ground for artificial intelligence. They also serve as a milestone for the advancement of the field. This project represents the final push toward another momentous milestone for artificial intelligence — solving heads-up limit Texas hold’em poker. The new techniques developed in this effort are ground-breaking and allow for strategic decision-making in a human-scale setting, while handling the uncertainty that exists in the real-world. The impact of such technology ranges from keeping our airports secure to robust decision support in evidenced-based medical treatments. This milestone is only possible through the scale of resources provided by Compute Canada: 800 years of processing power and 30 terabytes of data storage.
