Man Kong Yau
Man Kong Yau is collaborating with Hydro Quebec to improve short-term forecasts of precipitation. This work can lead to better information about the impact of events such as hurricanes on flow rates for hydro-electric power generation and the potential for floods. http://www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca/Chairholders-TitulairesDeChaire/Chairholder-Titulaire_eng.asp?pid=658This research is focused on the simulation of hurricanes using high-resolution computer models. The results of this research have the potential to impact Canadians by better forecast of flood events and improved prediction of reservoir flow rates for hydro-electric power generation. This research would not be possible without Compute Canada infrastructure because hurricane processes represent the interaction of many scales of motion and the interplay of physical processes on scales spanning several order of magnitudes. High-resolution modeling using parallel computers is the only viable approach to making progress in this challenging field.
