Ten Compute Canada Students Attend Premier International Summer School


June 26, 2016, Ljubljana, Slovenia – Ten students from across Canada began the one week International Summer School on HPC Challenges in Computational Sciences in Ljubljana, Slovenia, courtesy of Compute Canada.  This premier training event was formed to increase high performance computing (HPC) expertise in the research community.

Now in its seventh year, this is the third that Compute Canada has sponsored students from Canada. Last year, the school was hosted by the University of Toronto and included 11 Canadian students.  In 2014, Compute Canada sent ten students to Budapest for the event.

Through a rigorous application and review process, ten students from the 38 Canadian applications are able to participate this year with their expenses paid by Compute Canada.  The cohort consists of five students from the University of Toronto, and one each from Memorial University, Dalhousie University, Université de Sherbrooke, the University of Manitoba and the University of Calgary.  In addition to the ten students, Compute Canada’s highly trained experts will be mentoring and training students.  The curriculum features a robust technical program, research presentations from researchers across a variety of disciplines who have used HPC in their work, and a mentoring program that extends beyond technical advice to topics such as work-life balance and career choices.

The school is sponsored by Compute/Calcul Canada, the Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE), with funds from the U.S. National Science Foundation, the Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe (PRACE) and the RIKEN Advanced Institute for Computational Science (RIKEN AICS).  It accommodates 80 students from Canada, the US, Europe and Japan.
